Fly Popping in the Bannow Estuary Ireland

bass fethard 07 076Paul Ashbridge is a life long friend of mine and a fantastic shore and fly angler ,he and his family had just been on a holiday to florida, me sat at home sorting my plugging gear when the mobile went off ,,hi mate just got the CVEX Van Staal 10 weight fly reel and i will be in Ireland next week to try it out,,so here i go again have to get the gear ready for my best mate,,what flys will i need ,he reeled off all these fancy names that i just dident have a clue about,,i had been catching the bass on the top of  late on the poppers and my favourite lure colour is pink so in a insperation i said have you got a pink popping fly,,No said Paul but i soon will have  i could just imagine his fly tieing fingers going flat out working on the lure you see in the picture below.bass fethard 07 008Once paul had got his bearings after the drive down to one of the finest Bass marks in Ireland he was like a fish to water reading the run the holes this mans water craft is second to non,you would have to be on the ball to compete with this guy,, great interaction, he sees things that us mere mortals can only dream about , We eventually got to the point Paul wanted to be at ,within a couple of seconds the telltale thump rolls of the feeding bass in front of us ,paul looked towards me with that telltale glint in his eye that i have seen so ofen over the years when fishing together,he was on the money and he knew it .Paul punched the popper across the flat calm of the Bannow ,the main disturbance coming from the underwater sand bars boiling the water upwards to the surface,i explained to Paul that the Bass are sat in the holes behind the sand bars in the current but sheltered from it waiting in ambush for unsuspecting feed mullet and sand eels,,surprisingly the popper was working very well in the bright september sunshine,,bass fethard 07 072The water lifted behind the popper ,Paul stopped his rip, nothing, gave the popper another large rip and bang the Bass must have been hovering underneath the lure holding steady in the current ,the fish took 30yds of the CVEX ripping downtide what a wonderfull sight a fly caught bass is to the eye and what a scrap light tackle a tide rip and Bass all end up for some fantastic sport on the fly in Ireland,,paul ended up with a another fine Bass on his home made popper and a lot of interested follows, well done bass fethard 07 074Paul with his second Bass around 3lbs on the pink popper, this fish took at his feet and returned safley to the Bannow to fight another day there were a lot of fish moving around that day in september including a large pod of dolphins gars and the odd sea trout splashing  the lice off, the estuary is a haven for wild life and well worth a visit to the fanatical Bass angler

On reflection two old buddies had a great days fishing on the fly for the old silver bar the Bass in one of my favourite marks in Ireland, and as the tide receeded over the sand bars we decided to retire to the pub for a couple of them well earned pints of the blackstuff and again reflect on a fantastic days Bass Fishing
